Demystifying Meditation

Meditation. It’s a word that you hear at the local coffee shop, television shows, and news, articles that you read, and you may have ever hard of feats performed of inhuman achievements of power by people that have meditated. All of this can cause mystery to the practice, it can make it seem magical, and it may appear to be something that is only for people that live in caves that can dedicate their lives to sitting with their eyes closed for hours to achieve enlightenment.

While I can discuss postures for meditation, styles of meditation, the benefits, the techniques, and many other facets, I’m going to start off by giving you a place to start. So, here’s the list of things that you need to get started.

  1. Sit comfortably, preferably where you will not be disturbed.

  2. Gently close your eyes.

  3. Focus on the inhale and exhale of your breath.

  4. If your mind wanders, it’s okay. Just bring your focus back to your breath.

  5. When you are ready, gently open your eyes.

That’s it. No unique apps, bells, timers, or material things to purchase to get started. All you need is yourself, that’s it. Now, you can make this more complicated, which I will cover. For now, though, do this for a minute. That’s the basics of meditation.

I’ll be writing about meditation a lot as it’s a personal daily practice of mine.
